  • Car is fixed, and it was a simple, cheap repair \o/ Turns out the first repair actually had solved the problem (ie spark plugs, wires), but spark plugs have the same problem as computer parts like RAM: sometimes new ones are simply bad, and they fail spectacularly very quickly. Which is what happened with one of our new spark plugs; replaced, all is well, though the mechanic noted our muffler is going bad. Not surprising considering the age of the vehicle. At least that's something we can get done without it being an ~emergency~.

♥♥♥♥♥ I just. \o/ Freaking awesome fic inspired by a freaking gorgeous bit of Siken poetry. Reflections of the poem are woven into the story so well, and she writes the boys *SO* right--and with such brilliantly snarky banter and roughhousing between them. And I love how the snark is perfectly *them*, like tradition, the way they've always been--then becomes like a mask to hide the thing developing between them, and then shows the blend the old and the new of their relationship. This made me grin and snicker and laugh and want to draw hearts on things. And leave an overly long comment. (Again. ^^; ps Carhenge! \o/)

In other news, nearly set the oven on fire again. I dunno. I guess using two cookie sheets on the same rack screwed up air circulation so the thermostat wasn't reading right, and it just kept blasting hotter and hotter--nearly charred the parchment paper and the food thereon. Only realized something was wrong because of the smoke alarm, though it wasn't smokey at all (the heat, I guess?). Who knows. I suck. (Though I at least succeeded at break-apart cookies and nearly from scratch carbonara pasta). In other other news, I seriously freaking suck at a computer game. It is pathetic how badly so. Just makes it feel worse, not feeling truly comfortable, knowing that those certain few are judging me. I just..why do I make such *stupid* mistakes, and give them ammunition?

Also, love this song, so so much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wAS8JUP39I http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858671084/

Feeling kind of quiet today. :x Sorry for my antisocial hermit-ness.

Have been tagged for that 25-things meme by two people--I promise to do that tomorrow...or later in the week, at least. ^^;

Have managed to screw up baking break-apart cookies. Seriously.

Of course today would be the day where Dad would call (see point one). And man, can he chatter.

Hey, self. When you drink a bunch of rasberry apple cider, which is, you know, incredibly *red* and then go and brush your teeth, try to remember about the whole incredibly *red* bit. And not, you know, have a nice moment of panic that something in your mouth is bleeding. Dimwit.

Speaking of bleeding, hooray for fingernails. If not for those, I probably would have lopped the tip of my thumb off. I should be trusted with knives just about as much as I should be trusted with ovens. (Or toasters, per yesterday's incident that set off the smoke alarm after charring a split roll so bad the toaster had a cloud over it. I just... Yeah. /sigh)

Had gotten ingredients to do all the things from this http://theeconolodgediaries.blogspot.com/2010/06/another-arabian-night.html blog post last Friday pre-cold, so made myself start putting things together today. Really don't have the energy for it, but the stuff will go bad if I don't, and a good bunch of the vegetables and the meat were from that little farmer's market place (http://www.tomatotomato.org/) so that'd be a huge waste. All that's left is the potatoes, at least, and broiling the lamb patty things.

Edit: Ugh, must learn to not hit return while fussing with tags. Oh hey, it posted, what \o/

Anyway, heroic Putricide 10 down to 7% last night. So close. And totally unrelated, mmmmmm, Sam Jared Jared Sam, mmmmmmyeah. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah. ♥ Gives me a little sparkle. :)
whitereflection: (WTH DID YOU SCREW UP NOW)
So, anyone remember my cooking fail #3245340989 back awhile ago when I reheated chicken in the oven on an airbake pan (the sort that has holes in the bottom), and nearly set my oven on fire because of the grease/oil pooling on the bottom?

Stupid mistake, but you learn, and life goes on, right? RIGHT?

The other night, I made garlic bread. Margarine all over this bread, in the oven, on the airbake pan with holes in the bottom. I had a momentary thought of, oh hey, maybe I should put foil under these but thought naaah, why would I need to. I had no idea that there was enough margarine that it would seep out of the bread slices (admittedly, a hard-crusty sort). But it did, and thus oil on the bottom of the stove, started to burn and smoke, set off the smoke alarm. So yeah, another stupid, but I guess another one of those learning-stupid sorts of things.

IT GETS BETTER.

After the chicken, I cleaned the bottom of the stove, got all the oil up.

After this garlic bread--I didn't even think to check the oven. Didn't even look. I think I just sort of assumed oh hey, surely there wasn't that much oil there.

Guess what. There was a lot of oil. And it was still there when I went to pre-heat the oven to start cooking dinner a bit ago.

Didn't just smoke, it SMOKED. House was fucking *filled* with smoke. Had to open the front door, patio door, garage door, and get the kitchen ceiling fans on high, and turn on all the box fans to try to blow air toward the open doors. It stinks in here. And now I've got to let the rest burn away (I won't lie--this was probably stupid, too but I have to admit I pulled out oven racks and found a rag I didn't mind trashing, soaked it with hot water, and sopped up the remaining oil best I could.) so I can even attempt to cook, because how awesome will stuff taste when it's seasoned with burning, huh?

But seriously. Why am I so freaking stupid like that? Why do I make so many stupid, brainless mistakes like that. I allegedly have common sense. Now I'm like the 'gifted' kid in the old Far Side cartoon that's shown pushing on the door marked "pull". Good fucking grief. I swear, one of these days I'm going to end up killing us all because I'm a dumbass. : /

I. I. What. But for some reason it *amuses* me.

This afternoon and evening was almost entirely comprised of doing a [livejournal.com profile] spnland puzzle challenge, and then redoing half because I am a dumbass who can't read instructions right. I love the feeling of "1am?? Where the fuck did my evening go??" :| (Even had WoW running, but barely actually managed to play, just treated it like a extra-fancy IM program--though not sure why, because I was talking with everyone in Vent as it was.) Also, I seem to have missed the Team Hell chat (last night?), because I can't seem to manage converting dates and time zones right. Dumbass x2 \o/

Having a cookout tonight with the folks I D&D with, though no fireworks planned. Should still be cool. Originally was going to make something to bring with, but just bought something premade, one because I'm lazy and two at the rate I'm going I probably would have bolluxed that all up as well, or maybe just burned the house down. :p (Nearly messed the oven up *again* Friday night, thanks to two el cheapo frozen pizzas on the oven rack and only one not-as-wide-as-the-two-pizzas cookie sheet beneath them. Woo, go me \o/ )

3am is probably not a wise time to decide I need schmoopy fic *right now*. :|

Seriously awesome. Already also available as a standalone program for PC, and I'm eagerly awaiting when the Mac version is ready.

And speaking of flames... >_> I may have nearly set my oven on fire yesterday. I was reheating fried chicken from the grocery store deli, and I got the brilliant, *brilliant* idea that I would do so on one of my airbake-type pans to help crisp it up. The airbake pan with holes in it. Let's do the math...pan with holes, chicken that when reheated puts out a fuckton of oil and grease, gas oven...yeah. Filled the kitchen with a massive amount of smoke, and I have no idea how it didn't set my smoke alarms off. Awesome. I'm such an idiot. (And today I'm trying to 409 off the bottom of the oven over and over, so it's safe to run the self-clean cycle. At least I had the brains not to just go for the self-clean cycle right off, or I think there truly would have been fire involved.)

Off to James' D&D game today. Still wishing I could somehow switch my cleric out for a barbarian... >_>;
whitereflection: (winchesters diner)
So the other day James brought a bag of cherries home from work. Yeah, he works in an ag/enviromental lab. His coworkers leave the weirdest stuff on the 'free to take' table in their breakroom.

So these were obviously home grown, small and tart, and this afternoon I tried my hand at pitting cherries. I don't own a cherry pitter (but I think I'll pick a cheap one up), so I tried this method I found online of using a metal tip from a pastry/icing set to push the pit out. It actually worked okay, though I used the writing tip which tended to slide off the pits--I probably should have used the smallest star tip. But yeah, a mess of cherry juice everywhere, didn't seem to stain though. Ended up making cherry syrup from it all, since the skins had a lot of blemishes and bruising and that way I could just sieve the solids out. I'll have to pick up some good ice cream to serve it on.

Also made sticky rice from the recipe off a can of coconut milk (I've got a fresh mango I'll serve with), and a Thai-style peanut sauce to have with the marinated flank steak I'll do in a bit.

So, that whole thing where I cook a bunch when I feel really useless as well as guilty about not being productive and intelligent like you all? Yeah. Definitely there today, and probably a bit this whole week.

Saw this on the CakeWrecks blog, thought it was amusing considering how many on my flist are into the World Cup of late: http://www.cakewrecks.com/2010/06/our-world-cup-overfloweth.html
whitereflection: (winchesters diner)
Got a wild hair in my further quest to feel not so useless, and decided to make gingersnaps from scratch. Naturally they didn't turn out exactly like gingersnaps, since I had to do substitutions--I don't keep molasses on hand, but read you can use honey instead; and once again I forgot I didn't have ground cloves, so instead of ground cinnamon/ground cloves for the spices to go with the ginger, I used pumpkin pie spice (which is cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, allspice and mace). Also I didn't have quite enough brown sugar, so had to mix in some regular sugar as well. So they've turned out more like honey spice snap cookie things.

Was a massive mess along the way--the recipe said to blend with an electric mixer, but the dough was way too solid when I added the flour. Then turned into a gooey horror when I added a little water. And then it killed my hand mixer, I mean like made it smoke and I had to put it out on the front porch and now it's in the trash. Added extra flour to make it less of a gooey mess, but though I think I added too much, it still remained super sticky and a bit interesting to form into balls and roll in sugar.

But eh, Mom says they turned out okay, and she'd actually like them that way again (though I'd like to make them as proper gingersnaps sometimes, with molasses and the full amount of brown sugar, etc. And without the killing off of a small electrical appliance.) I suppose I should also give myself a bit of credit, since I can't remember the last time I did cookies from scratch. Don't think I've done those as anything but premade break-apart for years, maybe.

In other news--WoW is WoW, Wynn is up another level, am crossing my fingers that we'll soon be rid of an asshole of an intitiate. I'm completely and thoroughly crapping out at writing anything at all, haven't read anything of literary import in weeks/month+ now (pretty much just reading fanfic and manga of late, continuing with Fairy Tail and snooped at Nora at B&N the other day--though [livejournal.com profile] spn_vsCarry On, a Supernatural virtual season is really darned good and has me hooked), and don't even feel like making crappy graphics for challenges. Hooray that they have quick games, so I can still show as participating a little for [livejournal.com profile] spnland (woo, worst participant ever \o/, poor Team Hell). Having minor success getting my sleep slightly more normal, hoping to keep that going.

Feels like time to sample one of the better batches of not!gingersnaps, perhaps with some tea (http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=175633&prrfnbr=198309 Numi Monkey King Jasmine Green, Y/Y?).
