Two for
spnland's recent "Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue..." poetry challenge. The second's sort of my usual, but the first was a bit of an experiment (I haven't done anything with meter and rhyme in years). Four stanzas where each stanza is four lines of iambic tetrameter followed by a repeating last line (a phrase that's trochaic hexameter); and the first and third lines of each stanza rhyme. And yeah, the title was me being cutesy with apocalypse + apocrypha. Probably should have just titled it the subtitle and left it at that.
But the first was an attempt to explore humankind (within the Supernatural setting of the US, that is) during the apocalypse. In other words, those that aren't hunters--those just caught in the middle of this bizarre war between Heaven and Hell, not cared about or even really noticed much by demons or angels (except perhaps when used as tools). Anyway. Blah blah blah words.
Title: Apocalyprypha (A Hymn For Humanity)
Subject: humankind and the apocalypse
Pairings/Warnings: religious themes (Judeo-Christian)
Apocalyprypha (A Hymn For Humanity)
Believers, come, for Judgement nears,
come kneel in prayer on bended knee.
All gather close who quake with fear,
find strength in voices praising Him,
"In excelsis Deo."
Though omens' shadows shroud the skies,
dwell not on storms that shake this world.
Hold fast to hope through these End Times:
He'll not forsake who give him laud,
"In excelsis Deo."
The Horsemen ride; Death walks this land.
All His creation soon shall end--
by angel or by demon hand.
Yet still the choirs of faithful sing,
"In excelsis Deo."
Sing "Gloria!" at Lucifer.
Sing "Gloria!" to Heaven's host.
As they wage war, it's we who'll burn.
But when we die, hear us cry out,
"In excelsis Deo!"

Falling Is Like This
Tumbling
head down, headlong
into darkness so black
it's like
falling up
into a night sky with no stars;
plummeting
with no wind rushing by
it's like
floating in vertigo.
Sometimes I flinch to pretend I've landed.
Sometimes I remember everything about you
so I have something to look at
instead of the dark.
Right now I'm remembering
everything I did wrong
to you
but this time I do it all right:
I choose you
every time, every time.
It doesn't make the dark go away,
it doesn't make me stop falling;
but it passes the time
and makes me smile a little.
I miss you.
I wish you were here to catch me.
It's still dark
and I'm still falling,
so I'm going to remember everything about you
again.
Figures that the one I didn't feel took as much work/crafting and didn't have as much that I was trying to convey did better.
