PTSDreaming
The lightning had pressed his buttons in all the wrong ways; amazing how even after the passage of time, human beings possessed the grand ability to turn flashes from an electrical storm into dreams of explosion. Duo snapped awake with a choked-off yell and a racing heart, mind muddled by the roar of a Gundam detonating entangling with the rumble of rolling, echoing thunder. A vision of a body flying limp through the air and tumbling ragdoll-limbed across the ground was painted across his sight, and even though he'd been so far away then (so damned far away), he could see eyes dimmed like the flat-cloud skies above and a pool of red spreading, spreading...
He blinked away sleep, and then it all was just a bedroom again--white walls, grey curtains a haze of dark shadow over the windows, wobbling bedside table (still needed to be fixed, been so busy), faint red 3:02 glow of the clock. But the dream still jittered in his head, trembled under his skin, and Duo had to turn over to see Heero in bed with him. On his back--*like back then*--...no, one arm pillowed under his head, body relaxed, surrounded by sheets and blankets, not by blood and earth. He scooted closer, restlessly tossing his hair out of the way as he laid his head on Heero's chest, and it spoke volumes that one so battle-seasoned didn't stir at the touch. An ear pressed over Heero's heart, he could hear the steady, deep heartbeat, "...still there, still there, still there, still there...", and he continued to listen to the murmur of it until he once again slept.
Heero obviously knew when the dream happened, come the mornings following when Duo was pressed solidly against his side, curled just enough to use Heero as a pillow, instead of being spread-sprawled out across his half of the bed; but he never commented on it, not once in all their years together. And that next morning was the same: Heero said nothing. But for no reason at all, out of the blue, he turned to hug Duo firmly, tightly, as they got ready for work. Just like he did every time.
Twenty years, and he still had that dream. But twenty years, and Heero was still there, after. Duo wrapped his arms around Heero's waist, returning the embrace (like he always did), pausing from their morning rush to rest his head on Heero's shoulder. He pressed a gentle kiss against Heero's neck, smiling against his skin.
