Got to see firefighters get into action this am, on the drive into work. Got stopped at this one traffic light just east of 90th and Center, and had an absolutely unobstructed view where this pickup truck parked on the opposite sidestreet was 3/4 engulfed by fire. This thing was fscking *burning*. Anyway, the firetruck was just arriving from the other direction, and I got to see them start hopping off the truck. The driver had just jumped out and seemed to be heading back to do something (dunno what--on this stuff, I am most clueless) when the light changed and I had to drive on. Wish I coulda watched more somehow, to see what they did, without being a distraction/menace or blocking traffic or something like that. Was kinda trippy-neat in a twisted way to see. ^^

I am reminded, though, that full gear in summer has so got to suck. It was before 8, but already a bit warm and rather humid--not to mention them having to deal with this little conflagration. Not fun, I'm sure.

Hm. Too bad I didn't have marshmellows with me. *resists singing 'Chestnuts roasting on a burning truck'* ^^

In an odd instance of cosmic serendipity..

I saw the burned out husk of a station wagon on the interstate on the way into work... it was a lovely color of beige-smoke/ash with charred debris underneath, with matching charred tires and upholsetery and leaving a charred mess to be scattered by the winds. Hmmm, I think someone needs to call the wrecker.. hopefully they can tow that away as a hazard without having to wait the mandatory time you normally do to declare it abandoned....

That's gotta suck for the poor driver, though, donnit? ^^;; My grandfather's truck caught on fire once. Ever since, nobody in the family has ever dared to drive a Blazer. (No, that's not just a pun, that was the truck that caught on fire...)

I rarely watch firefighter stuff, though. Probably because my dad was one for a while, at DuPont. I mean, he wasn't attached to an official firehouse or anything, but he went through the exact same training as those guys--DuPont paid for it. I remember being allowed to try on the firefighter gear when I was, like, twelve or something. This was in an air conditioned house, mind, and I had it on less than five minutes, and I STILL sweated like a little piglet so bad I had to go shower right away...I don't wanna even THINK about wearing the full gear for hours on end while breaking into burning houses to rescue people...
