'Elevator go down the hoooooole...'

Man, my family... Dad called last night and said he's contributing some money to help with the car repairs--the old 'I've helped your brother so much so I'm helping you, too' thing. Totally unexpected, truly, and truly awesome of him, especially to be worrying about me with all he's been going through. I'll have to look at things after the repairs/car rental and such are paid for, but if I'm not extravagant I should still be able to do Otakon in addition to a trip out to visit Mom sometime this year--would've visited Ma anyway, but I'd been thinking I might have to skip the con. Rather nice how things manage to work out even when it looks all gone to hell, huh.
Had an encounter with a 10 year old briefly joining our guild last night. Now, I really think that it's not about age, it's about maturity, so I'd have no problem with someone young joining as long as they were doing their best to play the game. This kid, though... Such godawful spelling and incoherent sentences that people literally could not understand what the kid was saying--more often than not our responses were 'huh?' and '??'. Afterwards, before we were told the person's age, we'd figured it was a non-native speaker or 5 year old...or both >_>; And minutes after joining they started begging for money/gear/armor/etc, and I mean *BEGGING*. Like "plz plz plz plz plz plz plz", continually over the course of several hours. It was driving me up the *wall*. They just sat in Ironforge, not questing or fighting monsters to help themselves, until I finally commented that we would be willing to help, but they had to make an effort too (this not long after I'd asked if they'd tried going out and questing and their response was 'oh plz' >_< ) I remember being at low-low levels, go through it all the time when I start an alt. Yeah, stuff sucks at first, but you get what you can, and improve by killing critters and doing quests appropriate to your level--and it all gets better. I was so relieved when that kid left, and I almost feel guilty for feeling so relieved, but man, I could not deal with that every day. I hope it's something that kid grows out of, or they've got a tough life ahead of them.
But man, the kid was so incoherent and such a bad speller, other than the 5yr-old or foreign speaker theories, I'd wondered if it was someone pranking us or trying to make us look bad, or if it was someone who was severely drunk/stoned. >_o;

Date: 2005-04-04 06:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's the Astranaar/Crossroads, Southshore/Taren Mill syndrome. The sane just want people to fecking stop it already--the one time I joined in a major retaliation was because I was so damned tired of the attacks. But that really didn't provide any thrills, so now I just ignore it all. Though it's hard in Southshore/Taren Mill (Hillsbrad) because it lags the whole freaking area so badly, there's so many people raiding back and forth >_< You don't know how glad I am to not be questing around there anymore.
Yeah, almost all characters area fugly -_- Not as bad as EQ2 by a longshot (trust me on this one--*butt*ugly), but not cool. I like NE females, troll females, and I have a strange amusement at Dwarf males (they're just fun/cool somehow). I can deal with Troll males and Tauren males or females. And if I work at character design, I can find one female gnome look I like, and a couple female human or female dwarf designs that aren't bad. But orcs, undead, and gnome/NE/human males..? Blargh.
