Here at UNO--am rather appalled I didn't know about this, even though it happened over a month ago.
But then again, I'm just appalled in general. Especially adding in a new policy change I just found out about today: see, international students can't work off campus, right? Only on-campus. And they're limited to only 20 hours a week during classes, right? Which always left that when they weren't in classes, like winter break and summer, they could work 40 hours a week. *Could*, noting the past tense. New policy is in effect, thanks to our government, is that foreign students can *only* work 20 hours a week, no matter *what* time of year--even in times like summer when classes aren't in session.
So first they can only work on campus, and now only 20 hours a week, ever, at that on-campus job. Ok, you and I *all* know how much it takes to support oneself--even if scholarships or family are providing for tuition and books--what about rent? What about *food*? Medicines and insurance? Public transportation or a vehicle? And dear gods, what if someone *gasp* wanted some fun money? (Gee, how dare they want what any of us would just assume we should have?) So...how long until they're told they can come here to study, but can't work at *all* while they do so? How long until we just tell them to fuck off and stay out of our country altogether? Because far be it from us to act like anything other than xenophobic, bureaucratic assholes. (Thought of the day, a modification of an old Pogo quote: 'We have met the enemy, and he is U.S.')
And if anyone has the answer of 'well, just go to school all year 'round, then', I'd like to ask who among us was or is willing to do that. My brother did...for a little bit, until he burned out on it and started taking summer breaks from classes. And he's the only one I know of that even tried. (And you can bet sure as hell he takes the summers off to just work now that he's in law school.)
Oh, and if a foreign student works more than 20 hours a week--even if only by a few minutes--they can be deported. And their supervisor--not the university, but their supervisor--would receive a large fine. Chew on that, hm.
[Edit: Oh, and I should note once more that here, as well as other universities...the pay is for crap, for staff or student alike.]
