Bleeeeeeeeeh...and tired. But I am not leaving early, not not :x

Saw Sky Captain last night, and I must admit, I really liked it a bunch. Neat cinematography, great use of muted colors to give it that ages-gone-by feel, very good feel of 30s/40s pulp and of the comics and radio or movie serials of the day. Liked much the designs of things, like the gadgetry and machines--just had a really cool old-scifi feel to it, like the way scifi and adventure was imagined back then rather than now. And most of the characters were really quite keen.

The only beef I have with the film is Polly Perkins--dear fecking god, that woman pissed me off. I mean seriously, made me so angry it made me wonder if I could finish the movie, and did affect my enjoyment of the film.

I can't stand characters like that, and don't like how it seems the rest of the 'world' never really reacts to them but lets them do what they want. Annoying, know-it-all, interfering, eye-rolling, snarky, self-centered, dishonest, back-seat-driving, arrogant bitch, frankly. >_o I like how it never seemed to occur to her to help/protect the old professor--me, I would have been 'gee, this sounds bad, someone needs to keep an eye on this man'. And then Polly's little 'cause damage that could hurt/kill another and prevent lives from being saved or hide things instrumental in saving the entire freaking world just to suit my own petty whims' escapades really rankled me. (ie. sabotaging the plane in the past or hiding the vials)

Frankly, I can handle stupid characters, or characters that have no common sense/judgement--but characters that know they're doing something shady or wrong, but do them anyway because they only care about themselves and don't respect the wishes/needs/rights of others? Hate.

So yeah, she reminded me of all the female (or charcters in general) anime/book/movie/tv characters I tend to dislike, all rolled into one. I thought it was damned time when she got smacked (even if it was just to protect her and keep her from following)--but would have rather seen her pushed off the catwalk when she decided in her snippy way she had to do it back. If she got hit for all the stupid-bitch shit she did, she shoulda been freaking black and blue. (And I didn't like how all of a sudden competent-hero Joe fought rather dumb against the assassin woman, just to provide a chance for Polly to save the day using only a metal bar--and her angry indignation after really did annoy...considering all the crap she pulled and said, to get like that when someone was trying to keep her safe...rrrgh...gah, really wanted to smack her upside the head).

But the 'ex-couple re-falling in love' thing felt forced in--like they were hatehatehate with occasional moments of 'ohyes, I must act like I secretly still pine for you' forced fondness. Mel was right--I could really pick up on Joe/Dex vibes, and even if I wasn't a slash fan, would not have seen any indication of Joe/Polly (I could see more Joe/Frankie than anything with Polly)...there wasn't really any like there (and certainly no respect/caring for someone else on Polly's part).

Geh. Hard to stop ranting. Just really kept bugging me while watching. But to have some incompetent civilian sort force their way along, then keep *doing* things to cause trouble and no one at least yells at her, much less really goes to the effort to get her out of the way (hello, no convenient rooms with locking doors anywhere?)...hard to suspend disbelief that other characters would keep putting up with and not do anything to really react. Very...Mary Sue, in a way, when I think about it.

Anyway. Results from a quiz my brother forwarded to me, which amuseth me for some reason:
YOU ARE RULE 11!

You were designed to make sure that attorneys in
federal cases make reasonable inquiries into
fact and law before submitting pleadings,
motions, or other papers. You were a real
hardass in 1983, when you snuffed out all legal
creativity from federal proceedings and
embarassed well-meaning but overzealous
attorneys. You loosened up a bit in 1993, when
you began allowing plaintiffs to make
allegations in their complaints that are likely
to have evidenciary support after discovery,
and when you allowed a 21 day period for the
erring attorney to withdraw the errant motion.
Sure, you certainly won't get any brownie
points for being outgoing, but you keep things
on the up and up. It's pretty clear that the
whole operation would fall apart without you
around.

Joe *hearts* Dex FOREVAH!!!

*cough*

Why can't I stop saying that?

Yes, Polly was definitely annoying to the point of me audibly cheering when Joe socked her. I just think that Gwennie was phoning it in - I have seen unlikable characters become tolerable in the hands of talented actors. Such a shame...
