The 'saga' continues, blah blah blah...
Jun. 12th, 2003 08:16 amOkay. So weirdly enough, it *wasn't* our cable modem, which tests out fine. It's our router. >_< Seems that the thunderstorm the other night somehow got through our whole house surge protection and fried the router, which was then interfering with our cable modem signal. Remove router from the loop, all is fine.
...ARGH.
So. Anyway. I'm still not happy with Qwest/Tconl, as I feel this is another 'bandaid fix'. Meaning, yes, it deals with our problem of the last 24-48 hours, but does not address at all the constant connect problems we've had since starting with them, or with the problem we've had with the cable modem taking too long to connect at times when we do reset (at least that hasn't been a problem *recently*, just a couple weeks ago). But I'm still thinking about switching to Cox.
But I'm VERY not happy with OPPD, our utility/electric company. I'm paying 6$ a month for this whole house surge protection, which should protect all electrical items, the phone line, the cable line, and the cable modem (plus the router) line, and we *still* end up with a dead router?? They owe us a new router. They owe us an explanation as to why this happened. And they owe us some way of protecting the cable modem/router extra much if they're so damned easy to fry. I mean, why is it a cable modem tech knows that you have to put at least *two* of these surge protection devices on the cable modem line since that and routers are so extra fragile compared to other electric devices, but the damned electric company offering this service doesn't know this??
But in the meantime, while we have a working cable modem, only one computer can be hooked into it at one time. Which means we're having to share and take turns. Oh, *this* is going to go well. I, who prefers to be online constantly for webcomics, fanfiction reading, various browsing, mp3 dling, chatting, etc. versus he who must play Everquest for Mac 24hrs a day and do all sorts of Amptguard message board reading? ARGH.
And work. Am very upset at work. Was very, very angry yesterday. Remember how we're in that budget crisis, and how we're all cutting back and belt-tightening? Remember how my department is trimmed staff-wise to the point of barely-to-not-quite being able to keep caught up? And remember how my buddy Kelly works in a sub-department that was once 3 staff/2 students and is now 1 staff/1 student, and she was literally going insane/sick/burned out from being so buried by impossible work until our department started helping--meaning that between our two subdepartments, neither of us is getting ahead anymore? Well, seems the Reference department just got to GROW ANOTHER FUCKING STAFF POSITION! That's right. Out of the fucking blue. We're told down here that there's no way we can fill the old positions of people that have had to leave or retire. And Reference gets another GODDAMNED staff position. GOD FUCKING DAMN this HELLHOLE. I *DESPISE* my workplace. Con-fucking-gratulations to Reference, who can take their 7 faculty, 6 staff, and 4 students, plus this new staff position and shove them where the sun fucking doesn't shine! GRARRRGH. (Just for comparison, lets just say that Reference had already grown 1 1/2 staff members and two students during the past two years alone already...!)
I just don't get it. I don't get how the *HELL* that got approved when we can't get anything approved down here, when we're just expected to belt tighten and do more and take it on the fucking chin.
...okay, so now I'm angry all over again. Skipped talking with Michael last night in favor of hanging out with Anj, going to Sonic for junk food, and watching more Ghost in the Shell TV. But I see that though that helped, it was only temporary. >_< ARGH.
Want to quit work. But there's nothing in the want ads, and am finding nothing in the online want ads. Who wants a slightly used cataloger with a BS in biology and a smattering of experience in being a lab tech, phone customer service rep, and sales clerk? Bah.
Anyway, dunno what my online access is going to be like for a little bit. May only be on for short times. I might use this chance to start slamming down some of that anime I've been wanting to watch. Hopefully we'll have another router soon, if OPPD treats us right for their service fucking up. I dunno...
And in other news, tomorrow we have an appointment with the credit union that does our car loan to refinance our mortgage. It would bring us down about 2 percentage points, which should save us a decent amount of money per month, actually, once we get past digging into our savings to pay for such. Hate banking and financial things *very* much, but still, will be worth it to pay less mortgage crap each month.
Anyway...
