I HAVE THE POWER!
Jun. 28th, 2008 07:27 amBy the power of Grayskull, after 12 hours, my power's back on, w00t.
See, yesterday was interesting. As I was leaving work, the tornado sirens went off. Went back inside to the Circ desk, couldn't find any indications of tornado warnings, just a severe thunderstorm warning. So I started driving to the hospital where dad is. Heard on the radio that yeah, it was a severe thunderstorm thing--bringing 70-90mph winds, hail, etc. And it was already hitting the edge of town, ahaha.
So figured there was no way I'd be able to get home in time, so I kept on to Methodist. Just as I got there, the sirens went off again, and when I was up in his room, everything *hit* in a huge way. And then the power went out. :D (Things went to backup generators though.) They even moved patients and such into the center hallways.
After all was said and done, the tree damage in the city is *massive*. About 120,000 were left without power, including half of all traffic lights on my way home (this was fun, people do not understand 'take turns'). There were trees down, branches down just every freaking where, and the ground was just covered in shredded leaves (even the cars down in the hospital parking garage where my car was).
I get home, and find that yeah we've got minor branches in the yard--one dead 8-10 ft long one in the back, but no new tree damage that will require repairs and hence money. w00t again. But the power was indeed out, and eventually manage to find D batteries so to have 2 flashlights instead of one dead one and one dim one. Hot and muggy though, even with windows open.
Eventually Mom and I fed the cats by flashlight (Missy-cat wouldn't eat, she was just too stressed), then went out to Supertarget to find a crank flashlight in case it went on long. Stopped at the new Jason's deli place nearby for food since yay, they had power, then dropped her off, came back, and pretty much went to bed. Yay for having a battery operated travel alarm clock, plus cel phone, as far as being able to still get up at a decent time.
But never a more awesome feeling to be puttering around upstairs by flashlight just after getting up (even with daylight it's dim), and realize that omg my outdoor lights just went on omg power's back w0000000000t Now I need to poke at stuff in the deep freeze and fridge to see if 12 hours without being opened (well, the fridge once to get the cats' food) kept it at an ok temp or no.
Lotta damage around, though--Kel's parents had multiple windows broken by hail, one of our old coworkers lost a tree. They were setting up at the big park near UNO for a concert, so bunches of cars parked in the neighborhoods were damaged by falling branches and trees, and so on. I guess a funnel cloud was spotted at 180 and Pacific during it all, and winds were clocked at around 80-88mph. During the downpour some streets just absolutely flooded. Freaky, yeah.
