a town that all of us burn
Jul. 19th, 2007 10:16 amOne nice thing is that James staying home today meant I had time to stop for a bagel and also at Scooters for coffee. The gals at Scooters are so awesomely friendly. Why do I keep getting that rosemary bagel though--I always forget I don't really like rosemary except for the scent. Also nice: my radio station's added MCR's Teenagers to their playlist, and it amuses me whenever I hear it. I think the morning crew digs it, as they're playing it once each morning that I'm noticing.
Kind of went obsessive on that Iron and Wine song last night. Put it on repeat and let it play for hours. Which is weird, but didn't stop me. The downside of which is its in my head, but only bits and pieces of it.
When I was looking for lyrics, I noticed something that I've kind of been mulling over this morning. The one site I found, http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858669062 , is not just about lyrics, but analyzing the meanings of them. Now...over and over from so very many people I hear and see "I don't understand poetry, it goes over my head, I don't get the meanings". Yet you see places like these where people take a *song*, which is just poetry with music, and they dissect and analyze and interpret it like crazy. But give them just a poem? Nothing. Almost always there's just a feeling of 'I could never make sense of that.'
It's kind of not fair, you know? People will *think* about songs, but not about poetry. Why is it different if it's got music with? What about those of us who can't sing, can't play, can't compose? Our stuff will never be up on sites with people debating meanings. Go to classes, and teachers/professors end up with blank stares and silence--but a song, people will debate for *decades* even.
Anyway. Not like I'll ever write anything worth that sort of analysis, whether poetry or prose, so I suppose it shouldn't bother me. But sometimes it just gets me that something that I really have a fascination for and a drive to do isn't something that anyone would care about--not like fiction, art (oh man, people go nuts for art), songs/music, and so on. Just a bit of a jealousy/envy thing perhaps. Especially since, good golly, if I could sing/play/compose, hell even just write song lyrics instead of the occasional free verse, I would cry with joy.
(Also, the haha moment of the morning: Still getting used to having the cel phone, and also I am ticklish, right? So it goes off--set to vibrate--when I'm in a meeting with about six other people, and I jump and go YEEP! and they all were most amused. :| Go me.)
