Spent a lot of today stewing about those photocopies of Dubya that had been posted, and finally came to the conclusion that the only real way of addressing the issue was to talk with a higher-up, specifically our department chair. Lo and behold, she didn't know who posted the pics either, and she also felt that those spaces were meant for work information only (and that pictures and other items like these were really best posted in someone's individual work space/office/cubicle). Hence, she took the copies down--matter resolved.
Talked with her a bit about the whole thing, and even she was saying that *if* we were to get some sort of picture of a president put up in here, it'd be an official photograph/portrait thing, and would most likely be put up in a public area. Not some grainy b/w photo with them looking angry or threatening. And it wouldn't get posted on multiple bulletin boards like some sort of 'Big Brother is Watching You" thing. (And me personally, I couldn't help but feel like I was in Russia or China or somewhere like that, with their huge building-tall paintings of a leader glaring down).
It's one thing to put up things with your beliefs and opinions in your own space--god knows I've got tons of comics/cartoons that are mildly socio-political in my cube. But in almost any place, you have to be careful about what you put in 'shared' areas. Either you have to put up things from everyone's point of view, or leave it neutral and post no opinions at all. Of course, then you have to consider that a 'work only' space *really* does mean 'work only', even during interesting times. It was kind of reminding me that yes, we've got to express ourselves--say, on our own person, in our workspaces or homes, in our journals, etc. But as some have said, there's a time and a place for things, and a person does have to consider we're all quite a varied mix of thoughts, beliefs and opinions. *shrugs*
Tho I still am curious who put those photocopies up. Seems like no one knows--whoever did it used some sort of stealthy-ninja tricks or something. Or they did it over the weekend. ^^;; (And why only the Bibliographic Access bulletin boards? Why not on any other department boards? Weirdness.)
Anyway, topic thoroughly beaten like a way-dead horse, so am shutting up now. Right.
